Das Gerstl Family Retreat - Reschensee (IT)

Image
3-4 hour drive (can take car train from Klosters) from Zurich. Slow with public transport but possible. Can be done mostly on swiss trains (or the railjet to Innsbruck) and the 273 bus that is in our experience reliable in Süd-Tirol https://www.dasgerstlfamily.com/ Highlights Excellent food Modern and really great hotel facilities Beautiful hotel inside and out Lake location is stunning  Less strong for The local area has less to offer in terms of family activities than other mountain areas and you need a car to properly explore Quite a lot of screens in the kids play areas  No lunch included in the price for adults Food The food was excellent and you could tell you were in Italy and not Austria. There is a buffet element to the evening meal (e.g. dessert or starters) but normally at least 2 courses are served at the table.  They had a full pizza oven serving fresh pizza at dinner 5 nights a week as well as an ice cream soft-serve machine for kids. The kids menu wa...

Märchenhotel Braunwald (CH)

Car-free village - have to take the funicular from Lindthal. They will take you luggage for you and bring to your room, so pretty easy. They send you a pass for all public transport in Glarus so also free.  Food  Good, but not excellent. 3 choices at dinner - generally one meat, fish and vegetarian but one night they did one meat, one veggie and then one vegan, and that was a bit of a flop. Salad buffet was fine, but no real variation. Breakfast buffet was good quality food, but not the most impressive selection. Eggs to order and brought to your table though, which was good.  The dining room is really impressive without any real “bad” tables. All have a view and there’s enough space between tables that it’s not crowded.  After the storytime each evening a train drives the kids into their dining room. This was great - the kids can eat from their buffet at tables in the separate kids room (with supervision from parents) but it meant that our table in the main restaura...

Hotel Gorfion (LI)

https://gorfion.li/ Time from Zurich: 2 hours drive or train to Sargans (1 hour) and 2 busses  Food Very good, table service in the evenings, lunch and cake buffet.  Really nice bar area that has recently been re-done. Nice ambience with a fireplace and good drinks menu Kids Club Not huge, but a room big enough for the kids to play downstairs. Seemed to be no-parents in general, although i think if it’s very quiet they will let parents play with their kids in there. There is a separate, small, play room for kids with parents. This does have a very cool soft-play area in it.  Amenities Very small pool. It’s modern and there is also a baby pool with slide, but it’s not a big area and basically no sun loungers etc.  Gym but it’s fairly small and in a building a walk over the road Other notes Some of the rooms are fairly small, but fine.  This family hotel doesn’t have nearly the amenities and offerings of the bigger ones. The hotel is also much smaller....

Familux Objerjoch (DE)

Time from Zurich: 2-3 hours drive. No real public transport options.  https://www.oberjochresort.de/ Food Food was very good, basically continuously available (i think Pizza was always out from lunch till 9pm at the buffet). In the evening it's a buffet, although they have certain “plates” which they serve up for you and so it’s not just a buffet from a tray. Could sit outside in the evening. I enjoyed this dinner much more than I typically do with buffets, although I would probably prefer table-service, but the food was of a very good quality, so this wouldn’t stop us going back. Kids Club  Looked super nice, although we didn’t use much because we did most of our activities with Xavi. He went once or twice and was fine although apparently he did throw his dinner on the floor one time... {Added after 2nd visit} Emme was looked after very well in the baby room, often with 1:1 care. Xavi was again still a bit difficult but I think on reflection we should have sent him to ...

Falkensteiner Montafon (AT)

Time from Zürich - 2 hours drive, not easy to get to by public transport because it’s not really in Schruns (nearest train station) https://www.falkensteiner.com/hotel-montafon Food Quality was fine, but they have “live cooking stations” for the buffet in the evening (no table service other than drinks) and it’s slow and you can end up spending ages in a queue, your partner will have already got their dish and is waiting for you back at the table, or one of you has to sit at the table with the kids whilst the other goes and waits 15 minutes for a steak. It just doesn’t work and the hotel can’t deal with the number of guests.  Breakfast very good, but see above. Probably wouldn’t go back because the evening buffet just wasn’t the type of evening meal we enjoy Kids Club  This was okay, although both the baby and kids room had adults with their kids in them as well as kids being watched by the staff.  Pool & Amenities Very nice family pool with outdoor area. Also ...
