Märchenhotel Braunwald (CH)
Car-free village - have to take the funicular from Lindthal. They will take you luggage for you and bring to your room, so pretty easy. They send you a pass for all public transport in Glarus so also free.
Food
Good, but not excellent. 3 choices at dinner - generally one meat, fish and vegetarian but one night they did one meat, one veggie and then one vegan, and that was a bit of a flop. Salad buffet was fine, but no real variation. Breakfast buffet was good quality food, but not the most impressive selection. Eggs to order and brought to your table though, which was good.
The dining room is really impressive without any real “bad” tables. All have a view and there’s enough space between tables that it’s not crowded.
After the storytime each evening a train drives the kids into their dining room. This was great - the kids can eat from their buffet at tables in the separate kids room (with supervision from parents) but it meant that our table in the main restaurant wasn’t destroyed when we came down to eat later. Kids buffet was good quality with desert (normally some sort of cream and fruits)
Kids Club
The main room is pretty small, but has lots of activities and the staff always seemed to be interacting with the kids and helping them with arts and crafts etc. The kids dining room seems to double up as a room for other activities and so the kids were often down the corridor in there (e.g. bouncy castle or giant games or fun carts)
Amenities
Pool is good, has everything you need but not necessarily anything “wow”. Nice outdoor infinity pool too.
Playground outside is good
The animals are a nice touch - goats and rabbits by the entrance.
Other notes
Hotel is all in one building so at dinner we were very close to the kids sleeping (literally right upstairs). Feels very safe with no cars in the town. Xavi we could give quite a bit of freedom to (e.g. take himself off to soft play when we're finishing breakfast) which was nice.
Rooms are quite small (old hotel), we didn’t have a separate kids sleeping area which was okay as we could leave the room and have the kids sleep, but the rooms are definitely on the smaller end of the scale.
Drinks at the bar were good, although ambience was a bit lacking.
Wine tasting for the parents when the kids are doing story time at 6pm every night is a great touch.
We did a really great hike to a hut (5k) with the backpacks, great fun.
